Myplace programme information

1. Overview

The Myplace programme was launched in April 2008. Following 3 competitive bidding rounds, a total of 63 capital grants of between £1 million and £5 million were awarded for the development of world-class youth centres (some of them multi-site) in some of the most deprived areas of England. By the time the programme is complete in 2013, around £240 million of central government capital funding will have been invested in the programme by the Department for Education.

There are currently no plans for investment (capital or revenue) by central government in facilities for young people beyond 31 March 2013. The 63 Myplace projects provide a high quality template for private and voluntary sector organisations seeking to deliver innovative youth facilities for young people in the future.

Owned and led by the voluntary or private sector, local dynamic partnerships are the best way of continuing to deliver services through Myplace, providing young people with more opportunities and better support. Partnerships that look across and beyond public funding and that draw on the resources of young people, communities, charities, voluntary groups, and local businesses can bring in new innovative and cross-sector approaches.

From April 2013, Education Funding Agency will protect the government’s investment in Myplace assets.

This protection will extend only to requests to change legal arrangements – such as change of use and transfer of ownership, or breaches to terms of conditions that are detrimental to the government’s investment. There are currently no plans for any further policy on Myplace.
