Mongolia: names

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about names in Mongolia.

Name in Mongolia consist of:

  • family name
  • clan name
  • forename

Change of name

A woman does not take her husband’s name when she gets married.

A Mongolia citizen can change their forename or surname once and can reinstate their original birth name once. They must apply to the governor or administrative office where their birth was registered in Mongolia.

Name alignment

A customer can align their Mongolia passport from the UK. They can issue a letter of consent or confidentiality through the Embassy of Mongolia instructing someone in Mongolia to act on their behalf.

Dual nationality is illegal in Mongolia.

Mongolia: documents

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about documents from Mongolia.

Birth certificates

All births in Mongolia must be registered within 15 days in central areas; and within 30 days in remote or rural areas. Birth registration must be done in person at a civil registry office. Late registration is allowed.

Birth certificates are issued when the birth has been registered.

If a child is born in Mongolia and both parents are foreign nationals or stateless persons, a letter confirming the birth will be provided by the hospital where the birth took place. After the birth has been registered, a birth certificate is issued, but it will not include a Mongolia registration number.

For an unmarried father to be named on the birth certificate, both parents must make a declaration of paternity.

If a mistake is identified on a birth certificate, it will be reissued with a small stamp in the corner.

Hospital notification records exist with both names.

Marriage certificates

There is no time limit to register a marriage in Mongolia.

Death certificates

All deaths must be registered within 30 days at the State registration office.

Death certificates are issued on registration of the death.

Identity documents

Foreign national residents must have a resident card.
