MOD boundary markers

Boundary markers are used to mark the boundary of a site where a natural boundary or fence does not exist.

Details

The obligation to mark the boundary of a site arises under the Military Lands Act 1892 if byelaws have been made for that site. (In the absence of byelaws a landowner is not normally required to mark the extent of the land he owns, although he would usually choose to do so.)

The act does not specify how the boundaries are to be marked. It says only that the Secretary of State must “cause the boundaries of the area to which the byelaws apply to be marked, and the byelaws to be published, in such manner as appears to him to be necessary to make them known to all persons in the locality…” (section 17(1)).

Boundary marker stones would not be required where there are already in place natural boundary markers such as stones walls or where a permanent fence is already on the boundary
