FOI release

Ministerial cars: number of journeys

Published 31 January 2013

Q. We were asked for information on the department’s use of allocated and pool cars from the Government Car Service.  In particular:

-  the number of journeys undertaken by the Secretary of State and Ministers in the last calendar year using either the   allocated car or a pool car (information to be broken down by Minister);

-  details of whether the cars are used for journeys between home and work and the frequency;

-  the make and model of the pool car; and

-  the total cost of government cars and pool cars over the course of the year.

 A.  The Wales Office has one allocated car from the Government Car Service which is available to Ministers between Monday and Thursday. The Secretary of State is the predominant user of this car; however other Ministers also have access. We do not hold information on the number of journeys undertaken by the Wales Office Ministerial Team however I can confirm that the Secretary of State does use the allocated car for his journey between his London home and the office on a regular basis to allow him to carry and work on classified government papers.  From May 2010 to date the Wales Office has reduced the number of cars in Cardiff and London from three to one in total. This has represented a significant saving, taking account of the size of the office, of nearly £50,000.

We do not hold information on the make and model of any pool cars we have used during 2012. The total cost of the allocated and pool cars to the Wales Office for the last calendar year was £146,866.95.
