Managing medicines in schools and early years settings

Departmental advice setting out a clear framework to help ensure that children requiring medicines receive appropriate support.



This departmental advice is for:

  • governing bodies
  • management groups
  • headteachers and heads of settings
  • teachers and other staff
  • local health services
  • parents and carers

It relates to:

  • maintained schools
  • academies and free schools
  • pupil referral units
  • non-maintained special schools
  • independent schools
  • sixth-form colleges
  • FE colleges with 16-to-19 provision

This advice aims to make sure that medicines are handled responsibly in early years and school settings, and that school staff are clear about what to do in the event of a medical emergency. It will be replaced by statutory guidance on supporting pupils at school with medical conditions in September 2014.
