Malaysia: visits by Stephen Hammond and Helen Grant: May 2014

0.1 Summary

The Ministers’ visits come in an important year for the promotion of two of the UK’s priority sectors in Malaysia: Transport and Retail Fashion. Stephen Hammond will be leading a UK rail mission to position UK companies to win business from the next phase of rail development in Kuala Lumpur. Helen Grant will, among other things, attend VisitBritain’s Destination Britain event and launch an aspirational TV show which will take GREAT across much of the Region, and beyond.

0.2 Detail

Stephen Hammond, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Transport, will visit Malaysia on 6 and 7 May leading a UK rail mission timed to coincide with the start of the tender process for the next phase of Kuala Lumpur’s £10bn Mass Rapid Transit railway.

He will undertake a comprehensive programme supporting the mission including opening two major seminars, one organised by UKTI and the other forming a part of the Rail Solutions Asia Exhibition taking place in Kuala Lumpur between 7 and 9 May. Both activities are aimed at securing the maximum possible exposure for the UK mission members and to give them as much information as possible on the up-coming tender opportunities.

Stephen Hammond will undertake calls on major players in the development of new rail infrastructure in Malaysia, including the Chairman of the Malaysian Land Public Transport Commission, the CFO of MRT Co (project managers for MRT Line 1), the Deputy Minister for Transport, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance and Senator Idris Jala, Cabinet Minister responsible for delivering the Government’s Economic Transformation Programme.

The main purpose of the programme for Helen Grant, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Tourism, on 12 and 13 May will be to attend and open VisitBritain’s Destination Britain event designed to promote UK tourism and bring together over 60 UK Tourism-related businesses and over 100 buyers from Asia Pacific and the Middle East.

Helen Grant will also deliver the opening speech at a VisitBritain and FCO Prosperity Seminar, designed to furnish Prosperity Officers in VisitBritain nurture markets with the tools to promote UK tourism.

In addition Helen Grant will be launching the Fit for Fashion TV Show which will showcase UK consumer and fashion brands under the GREAT banner and will be broadcast to an audience of more than 400 million across Asia and the Middle East. Helen Grant will also attend a session of the British Council/English Premier League’s Premier Skills programme, delivering coaching skills in a country passionate about English Premier League football; and she will attend a training session of the Malaysian badminton team, where she will be inviting the Malaysians to train with their UK counterparts prior to the Commonwealth Games. She will be briefed by Gateshead College in Malaysia about their work to deliver a multi-million pound contract to manage and develop a major sports complex in Edu City, Iskandar Malaysia.
