Name changes are allowed in Macao.

Macao: nationality

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about nationality in Macao.

Dual nationality is allowed in Macao.

Macao: legitimacy

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about legitimacy in Macao.

Legitimacy

Macao recognises a difference between legitimate and illegitimate births.

A child will be considered:

  • legitimate if:
    • the parents are married at the time of birth
    • the parents marry after the birth of the child
  • illegitimate if the parents never marry

Macao: documents

This section gives HM Passport Office operational staff information about documents from Macao.

Birth certificates

Births in Macao are registered with Identification Services Bureau (ISB), Direcqao dos Servicos de Identificaqao (DSI). They should be registered within 42 days of the birth.

Birth certificates are issued for every registered birth in Macao.

If an error is found, a new certificate will be issued.

If the details on a certificate need changing, for example a name change or change in parent details, the amendment will be made to the original certificate and a copy made and retained for the records.

Marriage certificates

Marriages are registered with the Direcqao dos Servicos de Identificaqao (DSI) who issue a certificate.

Death certificates

A death must be registered within 24 hours and a certificate issued. There are 2 types of death certificate issued in Macao:

  • certificate de Obite, when a person dies in hospital, the doctor in charge will issue this certificate
  • coroner certificate, for death involving a police investigation
