​​​On 29 January 2026, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government wrote to the leaders of 2 councils due to hold local elections in 2026.

Both councils made further representations after his decisions and statement to Parliament on 22 January 2026.

The councils were:

  • Essex County Council
  • Pendle Borough Council

The letters set out his final decisions with regards to the timing of these elections. ​​
