National Statistics status of light rail and tram statistics

Updated 5 September 2023

Applies to England

National Statistics Status

National Statistics status means that our statistics meet the highest standards of trustworthiness, quality and public value, and it is our responsibility to maintain compliance with these standards.

Light rail and tram statistics were designated as National Statistics in June 2012. The continued designation of these statistics as National Statistics was confirmed in February 2013 following a full assessment against the Code of Practice by the Office for Statistics.

Changes to these statistics

Since the latest review by the Office for Statistics Regulation, we have continued to comply with the Code of Practice for Statistics, and have made the following improvements:

  • improved accessibility of the statistics through use of infographics and addition of a factsheet
  • added value by including more commentary on users of light rail and tram systems
  • restructuring of tables to allow easier analysis of data for Great Britain
