Launch of the Global Coalition on Telecoms 6G Security and Resilience Principles

Published 3 March 2026

The 7 governments in the Global Coalition on Telecoms (GCOT) launched the landmark 6G Security and Resilience Principles at Mobile World Congress 2026, with the support of leading industry partners.

The next generation of mobile networks – 6G – is taking shape. Trends such as AI, cloud, integrated sensing and communication, open interfaces, and the integration of terrestrial and satellite networks call for a fresh look at the security and resilience of mobile networks.

In this context, the governments of the Global Coalition on Telecoms are launching the 6G Security and Resilience Principles.

The Global Coalition brings together the governments of the UK, US, Canada, Japan and Australia. At Mobile World Congress 2026, the Global Coalition was pleased to welcome the governments of Sweden and Finland as new members, strengthening the collective impact of this group to ensure secure, resilient and innovative telecommunication networks.

The Principles

The Principles set out what these governments want to see from industry in terms of the security and resilience of next generation networks. This includes ensuring that 6G networks are protected from cyber and physical threats, have resilient supply chains, and can provide continuous reliable service.

The governments of the GCOT hope that these Principles will serve as a touchstone for future work to develop 6G standards, and will inform industry’s 6G research and development. They build on existing GCOT publications such as those on AI and Open RAN certification.

This is the start of a more in-depth dialogue between Global Coalition on Telecoms governments, industry and the wider ecosystem on the security and resilience of 6G. While the Principles set out a clear set of objectives and outcomes for 6G they are not the final word, and may need to evolve as technologies and markets develop.

The Principles are not intended to comprehensively cover all security and resilience issues – we have initially focused on the areas that matter most at this stage of technology development.

Industry support

The Principles reflect insights and best practice from industry, and have already received broad industry endorsement, including from the following leading companies:

  • 1Finity
  • AT&T
  • ATIS Next G Alliance
  • BT
  • Ericsson
  • KDDI
  • Keysight
  • NEC
  • NTT Docomo
  • NVIDIA

Gabriela Styf Sjoman, Managing Director, Research and Commercialisation, at BT Group, said:

We’re proud to have worked closely with the UK government on the 6G Security & Resilience Principles, and we fully support this shared commitment to shaping robust, future‑ready next‑generation networks. These principles will guide our approach as we help define the standards, technologies and partnerships that will underpin the evolution of 6G.

Eva Fogelström, Head of Security Research at Ericsson, said:

We look forward to working with all partners involved in GCOT to ensure the next phase of advanced connectivity is not only high-performing and resilient, but also inclusive, sustainable, and future-ready.

Ronnie Vasishta, Senior Vice President of Telecom at NVIDIA, said:

NVIDIA welcomes GCOT’s commitment to advancing secure and resilient 6G networks for the AI era. Working alongside our partners, we are building the AI-RAN platforms that translate these guiding principles into operational reality in software-defined, AI-native 6G networks.

Rob Joyce, Director of Mobile Access Engineering at Virgin Media O2, said:

Although the commercial launch of 6G networks is some years away, it is helpful to establish at an early stage the principles that will guide the development of 6G and ensure its success. The principles have been informed by industry input and we are pleased to have been part of this process.

Marco Zangani, Director of Network Strategy and Architecture at Vodafone Group, said:

At Vodafone Group and VodafoneThree, we are proud to play a leading role in shaping the future of 6G, including through our active participation in 3GPP. This work is essential to protecting customers from emerging cyber threats and strengthening the resilience of our networks. We strongly welcome the launch of these important principles and the commitment of participating governments to work closely with industry in pursuit of this shared goal.

Next steps

The governments of the GCOT will work with industry and wider partners to support the implementation these Principles.

This will include using the Principles to identify opportunities for collaboration in industry’s development of technical standards, embedding security and resilience into the foundations of 6G.
