Large Waste Transport Container Summary Report

Details

Radioactive Waste Management (RWM) has carried out work to develop a feasible concept for a reusable Type B Large Waste Transport Container (LWTC) to transport Higher Activity radioactive Waste (HAW) to a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF).

The LWTC has been designed concurrently with the Larger Waste Container (LWC) to provide a Type B package which can be safely transported within the UK, and which is as large as possible to support reducing or removing the need for size reduction of larger HAW items prior to packaging and transport.

This report summarises the development work which has been carried out to date and presents the progress of the latest LWTC concepts. To date, two container variants have been considered:

  • a top loading LWTC
  • an end loading LWTC

Each has undergone initial feasibility design and development.
