L plate size rules

The rules about the size of L plates that must be displayed on a vehicle being driven by a learner driver.



Any vehicle driven by a learner must display red L plates. By law they must be:

  • a red letter on a white background
  • a certain size

    You can start driving as soon as you pass your driving test.

    You must have an insurance policy that allows you to drive without supervision.
