Ken Clarke In Brazil: Promoting Health, Wealth And Open Markets March 2014

Published 16 April 2014

Rt. Hon Kenneth Clarke MP QC was in Brazil in late March and was successful in engaging with those responsible for oil and gas, health care and trade policy. This included Presidential Candidate Eduardo Campos helicoptering in for lunch.

The public highlight was the biggest yet UKTI Energy showcase in Rio De Janeiro. This GREAT funded event brought together 3 separate missions of companies from the UK (totalling thirty five), our largest IOCs, the Brazilian Government and over 150 Brazilian companies, deepening links and creating potential new partnerships.

The Minister emphasised the importance of the Brazilian market to the UK and celebrated the success of our companies in helping Brazil develop its multi-billion dollar oil and gas industry. It culminated in a Scottish themed evening, with pipe bands, whisky (5th largest UK export to Brazil) and Scottish oil companies networking with existing and potential Brazilian partners.

The Minister met Petrobras. He was received enthusiastically by them and was able to champion to them and other interlocutors the new UK Export Finance (UKEF) offer.

His positive and friendly meeting with Energy Vice-Minister Zimmerman resulted in a commitment to include business for the first time in our High Level Energy Dialogue, bringing together our energy and commercial diplomacy in one forum.

The Minister met with decision makers from both the public and private sectors in Pernambuco, the second largest health market in Brazil, and started to build the networks that are crucial to winning business in Brazil. His meeting with private health group GFV helps open the door to 20% of Brazilian private hospitals, including new technological asks in telemedicine and digitalisation.

This visit to three cities in one week further advanced our interests in energy, trade and health.
