Jobcentre Plus Midlife MOT qualitative research

Details

The Jobcentre Plus Midlife MOT is for Universal Credit claimants aged 50+ to help them think about their future through voluntary group information sessions focused on work, wealth, and health.

The research was conducted over 4 districts starting in November and December 2024.  The qualitative research design included interviews with staff, observations in Job Centre Plus offices and interviews with claimants who attended the sessions. It involved observations of 8 sessions in diverse jobcentres; informal feedback conversations with claimants and staff to understand their experience of the sessions; and in-depth virtual interviews with 24 claimants and 20 members of staff in 4 District Areas.

Contribution to the evidence base

The research contributes to the evidence base on the value of policies targeted at midlife individuals by providing feedback on a group-based intervention aimed at encouraging longer working lives and improvements in retirement planning.

Research value

Evidence will be used to inform policy development for midlife customers of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
