J Murphy & Sons Limited and Hochtief (UK) Construction Limited joint venture has applied to the Environment Agency for a licence.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of this application in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The application is for a full licence to abstract water from excavations within the Chalk aquifer and overlying strata within the area between the following National Grid References:- TQ 34820 77904, TQ 34821 77890, TQ 34745 77879 and TQ 34743 77902 at the New Cross Shafts site in Southwark, south London.

The application is to abstract water as follows:

  • 54 cubic metres an hour
  • 1,296 cubic metres a day
  • 313,632 cubic metres a year
  • between 1 November and 31 July inclusive in each year.

The water will be used for dewatering.

Further details are: The dewatering process forms part of the LPT2 cable replacement project with groundwater control required to facilitate construction. Dewatering will cease when construction is complete.
