We have received a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 for the following:

‘I have recently seen a copy of a letter from Hazel Blears MP to Don Touhig MP (Reference M5833/6) relating to the proposed Violent Crime Reduction Bill.

The letter states that:

“Following extensive consultation, … the case for an exemption for weapons used in airsofting was considered, but was not thought sufficiently strong to justify a specific exemption. In particular, no really convincing argument was put for the need to use such realistic imitation weapons for this purpose.”

I would like to know who was consulted, and what information was supplied. I would also like to see any information involved in reaching the decisions that the case was not sufficiently strong, and that the arguments put were not convincing.’
