Departmental advice on how independent schools should support pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development.
This is departmental advice (recommended by DfE but not required by law) for:
- independent school proprietors
- school staff
It relates to:
- independent schools
- free schools
You should read both documents.
The first document helps you to understand what to do to support the spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development of pupils. This is a standard of quality in education contained in Schedule 1, Part 2 of the Education (Independent School Standards) (England) Regulations 2010.
The second document updates the advice. The update concerns an amendment to the SMSC standard by the Education (Independent School Standards) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2014, It means you should actively promote SMSC values.
We will review this advice in January 2016.
