SMSC requirements for independent schools
Guidance on how independent schools should support pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development.
This is for:
- independent school proprietors
- school staff
It applies to:
- independent schools
- academies and free schools
You should read both documents.
The first document helps you to understand what to do to support the spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development of pupils. This is a standard of quality in education contained in Schedule 1, Part 2 of the Education (Independent School Standards) (England) Regulations 2010.
The second document updates the guidance. The update concerns an amendment to the SMSC standard by the Education (Independent School Standards) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2014. It means you should actively promote SMSC values.
