The Project Initiation Routemap (Routemap) is a structured and tested methodology used to set up projects for success. It ensures best practice and learning about the most common causes of project failure are considered at crucial early stages of development.

Routemap principles are core to any infrastructure project, and especially helpful where project teams undertake complex projects that test the limits of their organisational capability. It is a collaborative approach that brings stakeholders together, to improve project-specific capabilities, and enable government departments and supply chains to maximise value for money. It gives confidence to people developing projects, those approving them, and those investing in them.

Routemap was developed by the Infrastructure and Projects Authority in collaboration with industry and academia. It encompasses a Handbook, which explains what the Routemap is and how to use it, and seven modules. The modules offer guidance on the most common challenges for projects and explore good practice to identify and address gaps in capability.

In 2020, the IPA adapted Routemap for use internationally. The international versions, known as the Project Development Routemap include improved practical support and also new content, in particular to help projects align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals in delivering positive environmental and social impacts.
