We have a received a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 for the following:

Information on the deadline by which the Home Secretary aims to reply to correspondence from MPs and the number of letters the Home Secretary sent, in 2008 and 2009, which met that target.

We released the following information on:

The Home Secretary aims to answer correspondence from MPs on Home Office matters, namely counter-terrorism, crime, policing and related issues within 15 working days, and on immigration matters, which are the responsibility of the UK Border Agency within 20 working days.  However, it should be noted that the majority of the correspondence received by the Home Secretary is answered, on his behalf, by either Home Office Ministers or officials.

The attached table shows the Home Secretary’s performance against both the 15 day and 20 day targets in 2008 and between 1 January and 30 September 2009 (the latest available data).
