We have a received a request under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 for the following:
‘I am trying to establish if Laser devices have been type approved for use on motorcycles, if so the results and methods of testing. If they have not been specifically tested on motorcycles, what proof exists to their accuracy on such difficult targets?

It is my understanding that these devices were tested using vehicles with targets placed on them. It is also my understanding that pulses from these lasers are at the frequency of 300 milliradions, therefore at 100mts, the beam is somewhat wider than the motorcycle, leading to inaccurate results. It is my belief that the technical challenges for motorcycles are in fact greater than it is believed and separate testing needs to be undertaken.’
