Summary minutes of the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s meeting with the Market Engagement Group, on 15 June 2026 at No.11 Downing Street

On 15 June 2026 the Chancellor of the Exchequer met with the Market Engagement Group at No.11 Downing Street.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss “views on UK-related developments in financial markets”.

This was the inaugural meeting of a twice-yearly engagement series between the Chancellor and the Market Engagement Group. The meeting was held under the Chatham House rule.

The Chancellor began the meeting by thanking attendees for joining and noted that the purpose of this series of meetings is for her to hear, firsthand, the views of this important group. She set out the economic and fiscal context and noted the challenging macroeconomic environment. She also summarised the progress the government has made on reducing borrowing and the plan for growth. The Chancellor made clear that she would be in listening mode.

Attendees discussed the evolving global and domestic outlook, including the uncertain impact of geopolitical events on the UK economy and financial markets. Participants explored developments in global government bond markets and liquidity conditions, including supply and demand dynamics in gilt markets. Attendees also shared views on the potential medium- to long-term impact of investment in artificial intelligence on productivity and labour markets.
