Stability of reinforcement cages prior to concreting

Updated 24 March 2016

An incident has occurred on the A556 Knutsford to Bowdon Improvement Scheme involving the collapse of the steel reinforcement cage for a central pier.

While the incident is still under investigation it highlights the risks associated with reinforcement in its temporary state. We would ask all sites to review their own works in this area and the potential associated risks.

Further guidance on the stability of reinforcement cages prior to concreting is available from the temporary works forum.
