The Environment Agency proposes to change the existing main river map at Hawkwell Brook, Hawkwell, Essex.
It proposes the change as a ‘determination’ under section 193C(1) of the Water Resources Act 1991. A determination is a formal decision to change the main river map.
The proposed determination is that we will correct the main river map between national grid reference (NGR) TQ 85664 91831 and NGR TQ 85757 91830. The main river is to be the watercourse shown as an ‘addition’ on the main river consultation map rather than the watercourse shown as a ‘deletion’.
For each correction, the main river is to be the watercourse shown as an ‘addition’ on the main river consultation map rather than the watercourse shown as a ‘deletion’.
The change means that the map would show the correct location of the watercourse. It does not change who has power to carry out flood risk management work on the watercourse.
The Main River record maps show the watercourse in the wrong location. This is due to historic river realignment works which are not currently reflected in the existing Main River record maps. We are therefore seeking to re-align the Main River line to the correct position, to the rear of the properties on the confluence with the Hockley Brook and River Roach. This will allow us to exercise our permissive powers under the Water Resources Act 1991 to be applied to the amended watercourse route.

You can see the proposals on the main river consultation map.
The green line (‘addition’) on the map is the proposed new line to show the correct position of the watercourse. The red line (‘deletion’) is the incorrect line, which would be deleted.
