The second edition of the definitive guidance was published in March 2012 by the National Policing Improvement Agency on behalf of the Association of Chief Police Officers.

It focuses on practical issues and provides guidance for police forces on the standards of care appropriate for individuals held in police custody.

The guidance, which replaces the first edition, is available to download below.
