Grenfell Tower next steps

Published 20 May 2025

Applies to England

The government recognises that Grenfell Tower has a deep personal significance to those most affected by the tragedy and that all work at the site is sensitive. With this in mind, we are continuing to share information about the Tower, and listen to bereaved families, survivors and residents in the immediate community.

We recognise how difficult this time may be for you, your families and friends as you approach the eighth anniversary of the tragedy. We have written to you to share information about how we can support you to mark the anniversary in June, and pay your respects at the site if you would like.

Over the coming months, we will continue to prepare for work to carefully take down Grenfell Tower. This update sets out more detail about how the community can speak to us, and what to expect from the next stages of work at the site. The government is committed to taking the next steps respectfully and carefully. We will continue to work with the community, share information and answer questions.

How you can speak to us

We are committed to ensuring you can speak with us in the way most comfortable for you. This includes opportunities to meet Ministers, officials and the contractors working at the site.

We are inviting you to community meetings where you can come and talk to us about plans to mark the anniversary and pay your respects at the site. There will also be regular meetings with senior officials and the principal contractor responsible for carefully taking down the Tower, once they have been confirmed. These meetings will be opportunities to discuss how this important work will be carried out with care and respect.

We can also arrange to meet you individually, with your family or in small groups if you would prefer a private conversation. You can contact us at the email address at the end of this update and we can arrange to meet at a time that suits you.

What you can expect to happen next

We will update you at every stage and share more information about each of the steps along the timeline.

Confirming a specialist contractor

In May, we will share our approach to confirming the principal contractor who will develop a detailed plan with us. This follows the publication of a Voluntary Transparency Notice last month to indicate our intention to modify the contract of Deconstruct UK (DUK), who are currently the principal contractor for the maintenance and security of the site. We will be able to confirm the details after a 30-day ‘standstill’ period.

We believe DUK’s experience and track record mean they are best placed to carry out this work safely and with consideration for the needs of families and those living, working, and studying nearby.

Supporting you to mark the 8th anniversary

We will support you to mark the anniversary in June, and pay your respects at the site if you would like.

Sharing further information about work at the site

In July, we will share more information about how the Tower will be carefully taken down. We expect to be able to share details of the methodology and measures we will take to ensure this important work is carried out respectfully. This will include environmental and health and safety information. You will be able to review this information and ask questions.

We would also like to discuss plans for a second site where materials from the Tower which are not used in the memorial, or conserved, will be safely and respectfully laid to rest. We will follow the independent Grenfell Tower Memorial Commission’s recommendation in their report Remembering Grenfell: Recommendations and next steps to a memorial. We have been exploring options for this site and will share more information and speak with bereaved families and survivors about this. All materials from the Tower will be treated with the utmost respect.

Preparing the site

We expect to start preparing the site in August and you may start to notice more activity after the end of July. This is so we are ready to start work to carefully take down the Tower in the autumn. These works are subject to all necessary approvals being in place.

We are preparing for work to carefully take down the Tower to begin in the autumn. The earliest date that work can start is September.

We expect that once work starts it will take around two years. This work will happen behind the wrapping.

If you need support

We understand that conversations about Grenfell Tower can be difficult, and we continue to work across government, with the NHS and local partners to ensure you have the support you need.
