Gobians Sewer, Essex: proposal for designation change

The Environment Agency proposes to reduce the length of Gobians Sewer at Linford, East Tilbury, Essex that is designated as a ‘main river’.
It proposes to make this change as a ‘determination’ under section 193C(1) of the Water Resources Act 1991. A determination is a formal decision to change the main river map.
The proposed determination is that the Gobians Sewer between national grid reference (NGR) TQ6817279779 and NGR TQ6948079170, which is shown as an ‘on the main river consultation map.
Gobians Sewer was realigned in the 1980s as part of the Mucking tip development works. The realignment changed the route of the passage of catchment waters around the western and southern perimeters of Mucking tip but retaining the same discharge point to the tidal Thames at Gobians sluice.
This change would mean that the Environment Agency would have the power to carry out work to manage flood risk from the head of Main River to the tidal outfall of the watercourse. Thurrock Council, as Lead Local Flood Authority, would no longer have this power.
The change would also affect how the watercourse is regulated. If you wanted to carry out works in or next to the watercourse, you might have to get consent from the Environment Agency.
