Published 1 May 2026
The GDS Responsible AI Advisory Panel held its inaugural meeting on 2 March 2026, bringing together independent experts from across civil society, academia, industry and the public sector to begin its work.
The meeting focused on establishing how the panel will work in practice, building shared understanding across its diverse members, and agreeing what the panel should aim to achieve during its initial year. Members discussed the panel’s role in supporting the responsible use of AI across government, emphasising the importance of practical advice that can influence real delivery decisions, alongside transparency and public trust.
Panel members worked together to shape the panel’s priorities and ways of working. This included discussion of the kinds of outcomes the panel should seek to deliver over the year and the questions it should routinely ask of teams developing or deploying AI systems.
The panel also heard from senior leaders within government, including a short address from Minister Murray. In his remarks, the Minister highlighted both the significant potential for AI to improve the quality and efficiency of public services, and the importance of maintaining public confidence by addressing concerns around safety, transparency and appropriate use. This was followed by the Government Chief AI Officer, Kalbir Sohi, providing a high‑level view of how AI is currently being explored across government, helping the panel understand the breadth of existing activity and the context in which its advice will be provided.
The meeting concluded with an initial prioritisation exercise to identify areas where the panel’s scrutiny could add the most value in future sessions. The Chair and Panel will work with the Secretariat to use the outputs from the meeting to propose topics for deeper discussion at upcoming meetings and to shape the panel’s work programme for the year ahead.
