GDS Responsible AI Advisory Panel summary: 3 June 2026

Updated 16 June 2026

The GDS Responsible AI Advisory Panel held its second meeting in June 2026, building on the foundations established at its inaugural session in March.

The meeting opened with updates from senior government leaders. The Government Chief AI Officer highlighted progress across GDS’s AI portfolio and shared how departments are being supported to overcome key challenges, including improving impact evaluation and assurance in AI solution development.

The panel devoted significant time to discussing the transparency of AI tools used in government, how their use is communicated to the public, and the role of the Algorithmic Transparency Recording Standard.

The panel conducted an in-depth review of Gov Voice, a programme exploring how generative voice AI could support government call centres. Two subgroups reported on their engagement with the project team. Members explored the design principles behind government AI tools, emphasising the importance of measuring not just efficiency, but also public trust and outcomes for users.

Members also reviewed a working definition of responsible AI, considering what it means in practice for government and identifying gaps in current guidance. This included the lived experience of workers and citizens and the capacity of the wider public sector to implement responsible AI effectively.

The meeting concluded with an introduction to AI tutoring tools, a programme exploring how AI could support personalised tutoring for school pupils to help close the attainment gap. The panel heard about published product safety standards for generative AI in education, covering children’s cognitive, emotional, and social development. Members discussed child safety, the role of parents in overseeing AI learning, accessibility for learners, and the need for a strong evidence base before scaling.
