In January 2011, the coalition Government set out an agreement which included a commitment by the Government to “ensure food procured by government departments, and eventually the whole public sector, meets British standards of production wherever this can be achieved without increasing overall cost”. Government Buying Standards are mandatory for central Government and its executive agencies. This is supported in the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Business Plan to drive sustainable food procurement by the Government and the public sector.
