The Five to Twelve study collects longitudinal statistical evidence on the factors and mechanisms that influence primary school children’s education and wellbeing outcomes.

This is the first research report on findings from the study. It provides baseline data on the cohort in year 1 (aged 5 and 6 in the 2023 to 2024 academic year) and includes analysis of:

  • household socio-economic and demographic characteristics
  • child health, special education needs, health behaviours and socio-emotional measures
  • school environment and predicted attainment
  • home learning environment

The technical report explains how the study was conducted.

This study was commissioned by the Department for Education and carried out by the National Centre for Social Research.
