Guidance and notes: File types and file sizes for trade mark application

Introductory notes

These notes are not part of the directions. They are intended to provide background and additional information to readers.

  • the Interpretation Act 1978 applies to these directions. Therefore, all the definitions set out in that Act apply to these directions.

  • Where any representation is submitted in a form or manner which does not comply with the directions, the registrar may treat the representation as not having been delivered.

Enquires and service availability

  • the IPO will aim to make the service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

  • Helpdesk support for online filing is available between the hours of 8:30am and 5pm Monday to Friday excluding bank holidays.

  • advance notice of any planned unavailability of online filing due to maintenance will be given on the GOV.UK website.

  • the Interpretation Act 1978 applies to these directions. Therefore, all the definitions set out in the Patents Act 1977, the Trade Marks Act 1994 and the Registered Designs Act 1949 apply to these directions. Further, amongst other things, generally any words importing the masculine gender include the feminine and words in the singular include the plural and words in the plural include the singular.
