This Stage 1b synthesis report (2021 to 2022) assesses the evidence on the extent to which programme processes supported excellent development challenge-led R&I, and highlights lessons for future development R&I funds.

These are large-scale programmes and initiatives that were specifically designed to mobilise interdisciplinary, multi-sectoral research and innovation (R&I) to address development challenges and drive progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in low and middle income countries (LMICs).

The six signature investments are:

  • Growing Research Capability (GROW) programme
  • Interdisciplinary Hubs programme
  • Future Leaders – African Independent Research (FLAIR) Fellowships
  • International Partnership Programme (IPP)
  • Challenge Leaders initiative
  • Four Nations funding stream allocated to UK higher education institutions (HEIs) through the higher education funding bodies.

This report was produced in September 2022, commissioned by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), now the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT).
