You can no longer apply to represent the UK in the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) for September 2015 to 2020. Successful applicants will be notified. If you have any further queries concerning EESC appointments email laura.simpson@bis.gsi.gov.uk.

We are seeking applicants interested in representing the UK in the European Economic and Social Committee for the coming mandate September 2015 to 2020.

1. What does the European Economic and Social Committee do?

The European Economic and Social Committee is a Brussels based body established under the 1957 Rome Treaty to represent the views of organised civil society (employers, employees and special interest groups) on all issues likely to affect them. It provides a bridge between the EU and its citizens and helps give a wider view of participatory democracy.

The European Economic and Social Committee currently has 353 members nominated by the 28 EU member states. Under EU Lisbon Treaty the UK government is required by the EU Council to provide 24 members representing UK civil society, with 8 in each of the 3 groups.

2. What are we looking for?

Ministers are now seeking candidates for nomination that - within their chosen field - can show:

  • relevant knowledge and experience
  • that they can contribute effectively to the work of the Committee
  • that they are representative of civil society in the UK
  • current or recent public engagement in their field

Each member should have enough time available to prepare for and attend meetings (delegates are expected to spend between 40 and 60 days a year in Brussels on Committee business with additional time spent conducting research and travelling). Successful candidates will be expected to act independently of UK government and will be subject to final approval from Council of Europe and EU Commission.

European Economic and Social Committee members do not receive any remuneration. Allowances are paid to cover attendance and accommodation expenses and travel costs as actually incurred.

3. How to apply

If you want to apply complete the application form and background note for further details. The closing date for applications is 31 January 2015 at 5pm.
