1. Action: post-16 infrastructure changes in maintained schools

Local authorities are asked to return details of any post-16 infrastructure changes in maintained schools for the academic year 2016 to 2017 by 31 October 2016.

This includes details of any:

  • new school sixth forms
  • closing school sixth forms
  • mergers between existing school sixth forms

2. Action: autumn school census

Colleagues are reminded that the autumn school census 2016 commences today, Thursday 6 October 2016. The deadline for approved submissions is Wednesday 2 November. The database will close to schools and local authorities on Wednesday 30 November.

To help you make your submissions are accurate the Department for Education has produced a series of schools census training videos intended to provide background to the census and funding implications of the autumn census.

3. Information: financial assurance on local authority-maintained institutions with sixth form funding

We have updated the guide for local authorities on gaining assurance over the funding provided for local authority-maintained institutions with sixth-forms in the 2015 to 2016 academic year.

It is not mandatory for local authorities to follow the guide. Local authority chief financial officers must determine whether and how any work should be undertaken to enable them to make their grant returns to the EFA.
