Policy statement

DVLA is committed to protecting the environment, achieving net zero by 2050 and improving our environmental performance. We will reduce energy consumption with technological and operational innovation.

Description

DVLA operational activities and those of our staff impact the environment. The policy aims to communicate to all interested parties, including staff, contractors and suppliers, as well as the general public, that DVLA is committed to minimising negative environmental impacts which result from our activities, products, and services whilst reducing energy use across our estate.

Our policy is to continually improve our environmental and energy performance by:

  • working towards net zero by 2050 by reducing greenhouse gas emissions from our estate and travel
  • reducing waste whilst maximising our recycling and re-use opportunities
  • monitoring and reducing how much water we use
  • procuring energy efficient products and services
  • continually improving our environmental management system
  • ensuring sustainability is embedded in procurement processes
  • protecting and enhancing our estate’s biodiversity and ecosystems
  • ensuring an overall more sustainable approach to our use of IT equipment and digital services

Delivery and monitoring

We will:

  • fulfil our compliance obligations in relation to the environment, including energy performance, and the prevention of pollution
  • meet or exceed the terms of the government’s policy on the environment
  • work towards achieving our greening government commitments to protect the local and wider environment
  • collate, monitor, and analyse data to measure performance against our targets and objectives
  • encourage staff, contractors, and suppliers to actively reduce their environmental impact and energy consumption when delivering products and services to us and within their own organisations
  • use the energy hierarchy to prioritise action and investment
  • identify and consider implementing projects that enable the decarbonisation of DVLA’s estate
  • provide assurance for senior management through approved reporting mechanisms which includes climate-related financial disclosures (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosure), environmental performance reporting and through the sustainability steering group
