In the Department for Transport’s (DfT) data action plan, application programming interfaces (APIs) are defined as:

  • the default delivery channel for transport data
  • the main enabler of integration across modes and organisations
  • essential for real‑time, user-facing and operational services
  • a driver of innovation, AI and economic growth

This report sets out the findings of a discovery into the feasibility of making as many of DfT’s existing open datasets as possible available through APIs.
