Curry Moor reservoir improvements

Published 14 July 2021

The notice

Announcement of intention not to prepare an environmental statement - Regulation 5 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Land Drainage Improvement Works (Amended) Regulations 1999 SI 1999/1783.

The work

The Environment Agency gives notice that it proposes to carry out improvement work to the flood defences on the River Tone 330 metres downstream of New Bridge (NGR ST 31940 26922 to ST 31643 26933), located between the villages of North Curry and West Lyng.

The urgent work planned for east of the New Bridge is the widening of the embankment of the River Tone on the field side (away from the river). The embankment would be at the same level as the existing banks, apart from minor filling of low spots in the embankment crest limited to 100 millimetres. The rebuilding is to improve stability and allow maintenance of the banks which are currently too steep and narrow.

Intention not to prepare an environmental statement

The Environment Agency considers that the improvement work is not likely to have significant effects on the environment and does not intend to prepare an environmental statement in respect of it.

The work planned has been assessed for its potential environmental impact to biodiversity, the water environment, people, cultural heritage, ground conditions, and landscape and visual amenity. As a result of the nature of the work planned, and the mitigation measures that will be implemented at construction stage, then there are no or minimal impacts to the environment posed by the urgent improvement work planned at Curry Moor reservoir.

The urgent improvement work planned (with the mitigation applied) should not give rise to any likely significant effects on the environment. An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Screening Request was made to Somerset West and Taunton Council (May 2021). In response to this Somerset West and Taunton Council as Local Planning Authority for the proposed development (as given above) hereby adopts a screening opinion that the development is not EIA development (June 2021).

Any person wishing to make representations in relation to the likely environmental effects of the proposed improvement work should do so, in writing, by 12 August 2021. Representations should be addressed to:
