The notice
Announcement of intention not to prepare an environmental statement: Regulation 5 of the Environmental Impact Assessment Land Drainage Improvement Works (Amended) Regulations 1999 SI 1999/1783.
The work
The Environment Agency gives notice that it proposes to carry out improvement work to the existing agricultural access track ‘Stoke Drove’. The work is required to enable future repairs to the flood storage embankment on the left raised riverbank of the River Tone.
The access track is located approximately 600 metres to the south of West Lyng, Somerset, within the Curry Moor flood storage area. The track is accessed via New Road, at National Grid Reference (NGR) ST 31619 27141, and meets the River Tone at NGR ST 33218 27302.
The access track will be improved in 3 sections to produce a level track. In the first section, minor infilling of potholes will be carried out and a 50‑100 millimetre pavement laid using Type 1 aggregates.
In the second section, geotextile and geogrid will be placed on the ground, with 6F5 aggregate being used to fill ruts and a 150-200 millimetre pavement laid. In the third section, a second layer of geogrid and 6F5 aggregate will be placed to give a total average track depth of 350 millimetres. A temporary, pre-fabricated bridge will be installed over the existing crossing, with ramps being built up on either side.
Intention not to prepare an environmental statement
The Environment Agency considers that the improvement work is not likely to have significant effects on the environment and does not intend to prepare an environmental statement in respect of it. The work planned has been assessed for its potential environmental impacts to biodiversity, the water environment, people, cultural heritage, ground conditions, and landscape and visual amenity. As a result of the nature of the work planned, and the mitigation measures that will be implemented at construction stage, then there are no or minimal impacts to the environment posed by the access track improvement work planned at Curry Moor Reservoir. The access track improvement work planned (with the mitigation applied) should not give rise to any likely significant effects on the environment.
Any person wishing to make representations in relation to the likely environmental effects of the proposed improvement work should do so, in writing, by 30 September 2022.
