CoRWM recognises that neither spent fuel or plutonium have been designated as being radioactive wastes. However, given that it is possible that these materials may be designated as being radioactive wastes in the future CoRWM maintains an interest in the context of robust interim storage.
NDA’s stategy remains to reprocess all Magnox fuel but it is examining a range of ‘tolerable end states’, all of which aim to fully empty the Magnox stations of fuel.
CoRWM is reassured by the ‘defence in depth’ approach being taken by the NDA, and by the openness
with which potential problems are being confronted and planned for.
