Civil Service Stammering Network
Updated 19 March 2026
Who are we?
The Civil Service Stammering Network (CSSN) is a voluntary, staff network. We are a community where every member is celebrated and supported. Our culture empowers individuals who stammer to thrive and communicate with confidence. We strive to create a workplace free from stigma and discrimination, enabling everyone to reach their full potential.
How does the CSSN work?
The CSSN is a member of the Civil Service Disability Network and works to:
- encourage development opportunities for members to increase confidence and maximise potential
- educate colleagues on the impacts of stammering through awareness-raising activities
- increase understanding of workplace adjustments available to managers, enabling members to achieve their potential
- promote positive attitudes towards the capability and value of colleagues who stammer
- collaborate with Civil Service Disability Networks
- promote the social model of disability
- celebrate our successes and encourage members to promote these across the Civil Service
- support members of the group in reasonable and proportionate ways
Our activities
The Network’s primary activities include:
- introducing a tap-to-signal feature to make telephone services more accessible for anyone with communication differences
- host quarterly events that provide information on the latest thinking on stammering, coping strategies and best practices
- sharing and promoting workplace adjustments and best practices to make the application process accessible
- representing civil servants who have a stammer on cross-Civil Service groups and forums
- working with other Civil Service networks to make the Civil Service an inclusive, great place to work.
