Christians in Government

Updated 21 May 2026

Christians in Government UK (CIG UK) is a non-denominational staff network that connects, supports and represents Christians working within the UK Civil Service. We are passionate about supporting Christians to serve Ministers and the public, and to bring the blessing of God to the heart of Government for the benefit of all.

Under its current name, CIG UK has run the Whitehall Carol and Easter services and other events for civil servants since 1999. Our predecessor organisations date all the way back to 1872 with the founding of the Civil Service Prayer Union.

Formally recognised by the Cabinet Office, CIG UK is the umbrella organisation supporting and representing Christian networks in UK Government departments, executive agencies, and other civil service bodies.

Activities

Our variety of activities include:

  • Supporting the Christian networks of central government departments and agencies, comprising civil servants;
  • Christmas carol and Easter services;
  • Speaker events;
  • Prayer and worship meetings;
  • A mentoring scheme;
  • Contributing a Christian perspective to Government policy making; identifying and raising awareness of issues affecting Christians and how they can be resolved;
  • Developing inclusion and faith literacy materials relating to Christianity.

Values

  • Act in accordance with the teachings of the Bible.
  • Comply with the standards of behaviour and values (integrity, honesty, objectivity and political impartiality) set out in the Civil Service Code.
  • Commitment to the principle of freedom of belief and expression while treating all with dignity and respect.
