The Chief Pharmaceutical Officer (CPhO), Dr Keith Ridge, has written to Chief executives and SHA pharmacy/prescribing leads highlighting the publication of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) 2011 annual report on the safer management of controlled drugs, and the report’s recommendations.

The CQC report describes the continuing work to improve the safer management of controlled drugs, how changes in healthcare legislation are affecting arrangements for safer management of controlled drugs and the progress made on recommendations from the 2010 report.

In his letter, the CPhO, also emphasises how important providing support to Controlled drugs accountable officers is to ensure the safe management of controlled drugs during a period of reorganisation for the NHS.
