Published 19 May 2014

Applies to England, Scotland and Wales

Request

I would like to make a Freedom of Information request on car practical driving tests taken in the 2012 calendar year. I would primarily like details of people taking their test for their 15th time or more in the financial year. Please state whether the candidate passed or failed and provide a break down by gender. To make this clear, the stats could say something like this: 15th attempt: 152 men, 74 passes; 140 women, 80 passes 16th attempt: 78 men, 50 passes… etc etc.

Response

The table at Annex A shows the number of car practical driving tests taken nationally in the calendar year 2012 where the candidate was on their 15th attempt or greater. This information is broken down by attempt, gender and the number of passes and fails on that attempt.

Please note that the number of attempts is based on all attempts taken since 2004.

Request

In the top two categories - be it the 30th and 31st attempts or the 50th and 51st attempts - as well as stating gender and pass/fail can you additionally say in what centre the tests were taken. For example: 51st attempt, 1 man, failed, Test centre: Reading, Berkshire.

Response

The table below shows the gender, number of candidates, number of attempts taken and where each candidate took their last test attempt for the top two categories of attempts taken. Please note that all the candidates mentioned below passed on their final attempt shown.

Gender No. of candidates No. of attempts Where last attempt was taken
Female 1 39 Sutton Coldfield
Male 1 34 Hendon
Male 1 34 South Norwood
Female 1 34 Heckmondwike

Request

Finally, can you additionally state how many car practical tests were taken in 2012 and how many were passed and how many were failed.

Response

We publish statistics about the number of car practical driving tests conducted and passed on our website.

This information is exempt under section 21 (information accessible by other means) of the FoIA and a copy of this exemption is attached at Annex B.
