The Environment Agency proposes to change the existing main river map at Knightswick Dyke, Croppenburg Lake & Pitsea Tidal Reaches, Canvey Island.

It proposes these changes as a ‘determination’ under section 193C(1) of the Water Resources Act 1991. A determination is a formal decision to change the main river map.

The proposed determination is that we shall correct the main river map:

  • between national grid reference (NGR) TQ8050684363 and NGR TQ8050784400 (the Knightswick Dyke).
  • between NGR TQ8158283287 and NGR TQ8171183507 (Croppenburg Lake).
  • between NGR TQ8153483696 and NGR TQ8162883582 (the Pitsea Tidal Reaches).

For each correction, the main river is to be the watercourse shown as an ‘addition’ on the main river consultation map rather than the watercourse shown as a ‘deletion’.

These changes mean that the map would show the correct location of the watercourse. They do not change who has power to carry out flood risk management work on the watercourse.

The need for these changes has been identified as a result of previous flood risk management schemes on Canvey Island:

  • Knightswick Dyke – change of main river alignment to reflect the revised passage of water through the pumping station immediately landward of the tidal defences which replaced the previous tidal sluice
  • Croppenburg Lake – change of main river alignment to reflect the creation of a new pumping main to connect to the new pumping station immediately landward of the tidal defences which replaced the previous gravity sluice.
  • Pitsea Tidal Reaches – change of main river alignment to reflect the revised passage of water towards the new Croppenburg pumping station rather than through the now-abandoned & sealed Smallgains Dam sluice.
