Details

In the 2021 National AI Strategy, the government committed to strengthening the UK’s role as a global AI leader. In 2022 the government commissioned this analytical study of the AI sector in order to increase our understanding of the sector, and allow us to monitor developments over time, and evaluate interventions to best support sector growth.

This comprehensive report is key to developing a robust evidence base, using a methodology that we can repeat for year on year comparisons, and will allow us to benchmark progress and provide analytical insight to policy development.

The research aims to answer important questions on the AI sector, such as:

  • How much does the UK’s AI sector contribute to the UK economy?
  • Is investment enabling growth, development, innovation and R&D for AI startups?
  • What products and services does the AI sector produce and offer? And which sub-sectors does it mostly serve?

The research provides estimates of revenue, gross value added (GVA), employment, growth, investment, trade, and more.

The study was produced for the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology by Perspective Economics, Ipsos and Glass.ai.
