Anglian Water Services Limited: applications made to abstract water

Details of the applications

Anglian Water Services Limited has applied to the Environment Agency for two licences.

The Environment Agency is giving notice of these applications in accordance with Section 37 of the Water Resources Act 1991 and Regulation 6 of the Water Resources (Abstraction and Impounding) Regulations 2006.

The following applications have been made to replace existing time limited variations on the same terms which are due to expire on 31 March 2026:

Application NPS/WR/044262; Licence Number: 7/35/06/*G/0124, Source of water and location: Groundwater in Suffolk. The previous variation being:

  • At National Grid Reference (NGR) TM 18 61 increase from 2,700 to 5,000 cubic metres per day. At NGR TM 19 47 increase from 3,092 to 6,000 cubic metres per day and from 1,128,580 to 1,700,000 cubic metres per year. At NGR TM 31 54 increase from 8,183 to 11,000 cubic metres per day and from 2,986,795 to 4,000,000 cubic metres per year.

  • Abstraction from an additional source at NGR TM 21 47 of 6,000 cubic metres per day and 1,700,000 cubic metres per year (quantities aggregated with source at NGR TM 19 47).

  • A reduction to the whole licence quantity from 5,100,875 to 4,000,000 cubic metres per year.

Application NPS/WR/044441; Licence Number 7/35/08/*G/0190A, Source of water, location, and NGR: Groundwater in Suffolk at TM 11 46; The previous variation being:

  • Increase from 9,000 to 13,000 cubic metres per day and 3,285,000 to 4,000,000 cubic metres per year. Subject to an aggregate with licence 7/35/08/*G/0152 of 13,000,000 cubic metres per year.

For both applications the water will be abstracted all year for the purpose of public water supply.

For all applications the applicant has applied to abstract on the same terms as presently authorised. The applicant opposes reductions being made to the authorised annual abstraction quantities, designed to avoid the risk of waterbody deterioration, being made immediately, citing (amongst other things) over-riding public interest under Regulation 19 of the Water Environment (Water Framework Directive) (England and Wales) Regulations 2017.
