FOI release

Amount of money received for practical driving tests not conducted in financial year 2012 to 2013

Published 24 July 2013

This is Freedom of Information request IA/00244/13.

1. 1 Request

Can you please inform me, for the financial year 2012-13 how much money did the Agency receive for practical driving tests which did not take place because of problems specifically with licence documentation (or for whatever reason, if you do not have separate information regarding tests aborted due to problems with licences)?

2. Response

We do not hold specific information about how much money we have received for practical driving tests which did not take place because of problems specifically with licence documentation. However we are able to provide the number of tests that have not been conducted due to the candidate being unable to produce the correct documentation.

Between 1 April 2012 and 31 March 2013 there were 5,497 practical driving that were not conducted due to the candidate being unable to produce the correct documentation. Please note that this figure includes all categories of test.

Although we do not hold the figures you have requested you may be able to estimate an approximate figure from the driving test fee information. This information can be found on our website at https://www.gov.uk/driving-test-cost.

3. 2 Request

What is the policy of the Agency regarding the work of test staff who have an appointment to examine a candidate on the practical driving test but whose test is aborted ie what duties are undertaken and costs incurred in the case of such aborted tests?

4. Response

We do not hold any information about a written policy concerning what duties an examiner would undertake and the costs incurred in the case of an aborted test.

However, the expectation is that the examiner concerned would carry out admin work, either on their own initiative or as directed by the test centre manager (TCM). Should the examiner in question be the TCM then there may be an opportunity for a supervised test to be carried out. In such cases, although the test would not be completed, the same overheads would be incurred e.g. examiner salary and premises costs.
