In 2011, Ofsted published a survey report on the use of off-site alternative provision by schools and pupil referral units. The survey identified successful features of alternative provision and commented on a range of weaknesses that inspectors had found during their visits.

As a result of the survey’s findings, the Department for Education (DfE) commissioned Ofsted to carry out a second survey on the same topic. This page has the findings from the first year of this survey as well as the final findings.
