23 April 2019: Promotion of Covonia by Thornton & Ross

Updated 24 May 2019

As part of our routine scrutiny of promotional material for medicinal products, MHRA became aware of retweets by @covoniauk of third-party tweets that referred to Covonia. In line with an upheld case about Covonia social media in 2018 and guidance on social media by the Committee of Advertising Practice we considered that the retweets constituted promotional material and therefore should include the statutory information necessary for the correct use of a medicine.

Thornton & Ross confirmed that they had deleted promotional tweets that did not include the statutory information and that they had introduced measures to ensure future material complied with the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Guidance on the information necessary for the correct use of a medicine can be found in section 5.5 of the Blue Guide.
