Using Extinction Rebellion as a case study, this essay explores the challenges of balancing free speech with counter-extremism when dealing with environmental activism.

It examines how apocalyptic messaging and direct action tactics complicate traditional approaches to extremism, and the difficulties policymakers face when addressing groups that maintain some public sympathy whilst engaging in disruptive activities.

These essays have been independently commissioned. The views and opinions expressed are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of the UK Government or the Commission for Countering Extremism.
